Questions about wallpaper installation?

How much wallpaper should I order?

30% extra. Depending on the repeat of the paper you're using, which is how much the pattern repeats itself, usually right around 30% extra, depending on also windows, doorways, etc.

A lot of online wallpaper tools will recommend only 10-20% extra, but we see this fall just short too often, and want to save you the dread of ordering twice.

Can you help me order wallpaper?

Yes! We would prefer to help you order, and we will gladly even come measure for you first. It prevents us from ordering not enough wallpaper or too much. And that way we know also exactly what adhesives, exactly what primers, tools, etc before the job.

What if I have a textured wall?

There are two main options: 1) You can use liner paper, which is very thick paper laid over CMU walls, brick walls, grooved walls, etc. This is used for walls that you want to keep the structure intact when you remove the wallpaper years down the road. 2) The most common technique is just a joint compound (drywall mud) skim coat. A skim coat is a really light mud that you basically put a thin flat coat over the wall, and once that dries, you use a wallpaper primer to go over that. The wallpaper primer is to promote adhesion of the wallpaper and also makes it for when you want to rip the wallpaper off years down the road, it's not going to rip up your wall and you'll be left with a perfectly flat wall to paint or do whatever you like with.

Does it matter what kind of wallpaper I have installed?

It doesn't matter. The only places of concern are in high vapor areas or high moisture areas like bathrooms where there's going to be a shower going. But most areas like powder rooms and stuff you won't need a special wallpaper. If you do want to hang where there is a shower, there's different papers recommended, like the heavy vinyl or a few other ones.

Should I hang new wallpaper over the old wallpaper, or should I strip it?

We recommend stripping the old wallpaper first. That way the work that you're getting will be 100% our work, and won’t have worries of the old work detaching or not adhering correctly to the old paper.

Will stripping old wallpaper ruin my wall?

It is rare, but sometimes in older homes you'll see wallpaper straight over bare drywall before bare drywall was ever painted or primed. And that is the only time where it will ruin a wall, because it'll rip your drywall all the way apart. If it's not on bare drywall, it's not a problem. We can take it off safely with a steamer, and have special chemicals if needed.

Can you do seamless hanging, or will I see the seams?

If you're going with a grass cloth you will never see seams with us. If you're going with the grass cloth paper, you will see lines because it is what is called a panel system, which are not white behind the lines or the seams. If you're dealing with regular wallpaper where the patterns are matching, you won't see any seams at all.

Is the wallpaper permanent?

No, it's not permanent at all. The primer we use is made to be removed, so when you are ready, if you want to take that wallpaper off in 10 years, it could come right off with the steamer or with the chemicals that they make. But it will last an easy 20 years. We provide a 10-year warranty on our work as well.

Can I hang pictures on a wallpapered wall?

You can hang pictures, but recommend for the wall to dry 100%. So at least 24 hours after the wallpaper is hung and we're gone.

Can you wallpaper over unique architecture such as nooks, cubbies, cutouts, etc.?

Usually as long as everything is square and not rounded, can go over pretty much anything. We would need to take a look first for anything rounded.

Can you wallpaper a ceiling or staircase?

Yes, you could wallpaper both, and we have donne both many times. For ceilings, depending on the texture, may need prep work.
